FARMER TO FARMER EXTENSION : A SUCCESSFUL MODEL : Ms. ANNAMMA PETER

Background

Smt.Annamma Peter is a rural housewife who lives in Thumpamon village of Pandalam block. She has several under utilized minor fruit trees including jackfruit on her piece of land and she aspires to do food processing. About seven years ago Annamma Peter @ ‘Peter ammamma’s (her group members used to call her like that) life changed for the better.  In 2004, she enrolled as a stakeholder at the Women in Agriculture programme of Dept. of Agriculture which was technically supported by CARD-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Pathanamthitta in Agro-processing and value addition. Later   she was a stakeholder of State Food Security Mission programme implemented by KVK. . she was equipped  on the   basic  principles of preservation, the refinement process of traditional products, product specifications, packaging, licensing and unit registration procedures, as per the rules and regulations of Govt. of India. Today this 55-year-old mother and grandmother manage the production and supply of fruit and vegetable based juice and snack products throughout the year. Smt.Peter now runs a microenterprise in jackfruit products under the brand name ‘DREAMS’. The neatly packaged and labeled products are retailed through various sales centers in Pathanamthitta district. Dreams produces a variety of other agriculture produces too, in order to meet local demands on fruits, vegetables, honey, vermi-compost, etc. she is now a master trainer of  CARD-KVK and also act as a  Resource person for Women Self Groups of Thumpamon Grama Panchayath, Dept.of Agriculture and Jana Shikshan Sansthan. Among our master trainers she has got unique skill in training technology dissemination in agro-processing and value addition.

2004

 Established link with KVK as stake holder of Women in  Agriculture Programme. Attended trainings and demonstrations in value addition fruits and vegetables.

2005

In touch with KVK and taking advisory services in refinement of traditional technologies of  fruit and vegetable processing.

2005

KVK rendered support for the farmer fair organized by women groups.

2006

Women group lead by Annamma Peter was selected for running ‘Eco-Shop’- an initiative of Dept. of Agriculture with technical support from KVK, for marketing.

2007

KVK conducted  impact assessment among 30 Women in Agriculture groups of the district and rated the group lead by Smt. Annamma Peter as most sustainable one even after the withdrawal of the programme.

2008  

In touch with KVK, Participated  in farmer fair which was organized at KVK in connection with International women’s Day.

2009

Attended method demonstrations in preservation of jackfruit at KVK. Attended training programmes in bee keeping, Vegetable cultivation and vermin composting.

2010

KVK identified as a stakeholder under the project “Establishment of Common Facility Centre

for rural women on value added products for under exploited fruits food security programme of Govt. of Kerala and undergone series of capacity building and orientation programmes along with 100  women members.

2010

Undergone SHM sponsored vocational courses on agro-processing and value added products from fruit and vegetables, cocoa processing, packaging and labeling at  KVK.

2011

Strategic plan for initiating small scale agro-processing unit with special emphasis to jackfruit under the brand “Dreams”. Obtained SSI registration from District industries Centre and subsequently license from Grama Panchayath, along with other stake holders of KVK programme.

2012

Product standardisation at her own level and developed flow charts for variety of products in consultation with KVK.  KVK renders support for designing and develop packaging models and mandatory label for her brand products proposed.

2012

KVK organized skill updating programme for stakeholders in food safety regulations and quality control as per FSSAI guidelines. Participated in Ex-trainees meet and handled an experience sharing session.

2013

Participated in ‘Haritha Sangamam’ organized by KVK. KVK recommended  her as “Master trainer” to Dept. of Agriculture. She conducted a series of training   programmes for farm women and extension functionaries at Farmer’s Training Centre. Also KVK suggested her for the programmes organized by colleges and church for Rural Youths. Later, for ‘Jana Shikshan Sansthan’ and village level community development block has identified her as ‘Resuorce Person’ for vocational trainings in Agro-processing and Value addition.

2013

In touch with KVK, for Front Line Demonstration in IIHR technology on “Osmotic dehydration of pineapple”.

2014

  Received “Gruiha Mithra 2013” award for holistic  approach  in agriculture and value addition from Farmers club, NABARD.  Mass Media representation through a. Community Radio Programme of KVK b. reported articles in agriculture journals, c. News paper Dailies.

CARD-KVK’s initiatives in promoting the concept of  quality processing, packaging, labeling, registration of units and marketing has brought to the limelight a substantial number of women entrepreneurs and master trainers specialized in agro-processing and value addition of fruits with special emphasis to jackfruit.
